Abstract of the Talk

This talk explores the role of simulation-based medical education in preparing healthcare professionals for highstakes, critical events. Drawing from extensive experience in medical training, the session will highlight how simulation enhances clinical decision-making, teamwork, and crisis resource management. It will also present practical insights from working as a Trainer of Trainers in simulation within humanitarian contexts, including the development and delivery of “how to react” simulations in resource-limited and high-pressure environments with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Finally, the talk will connect training to real-world application through first-hand experience as a volunteer physician during the DANA floods in Valencia, reflecting on how simulation training translates into effective response in complex emergencies. The session aims to bridge education, preparedness, and real-life impact.

About the Speaker

Elena Sancho, MD, is an anesthesiologist and intensivist working in Uppsala University hospital, with a strong focus on medical education, simulation-based training, and preparedness for critical events. She has extensive experience designing and delivering simulation programs aimed at improving clinical performance, teamwork, and crisis management in healthcare settings. She has worked as a Trainer of Trainers in simulation with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), where she contributed to building local capacity through practical, context-adapted training, including “how to react” simulation scenarios for high-risk environments. Her professional interests center on bridging the gap between training and real-world response. This perspective has been reinforced through her work as a volunteer physician during the DANA floods in Valencia, where she applied her expertise in emergency and crisis situations.

About ARISE

ARISE (Augsburger Nachwuchsprogramm für Organismus, Nervensystem und Umwelt) is a junior research training program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Augsburg. It is a funded by the Else Kr?ner-Fresenius Foundation (EKFS) and aims to educate and further train young physicians at the interface of environmental sciences and translational neuroscience. By inviting leading researchers and experts, the ARISE seminar series offers a platform for graduate students, staff, researchers, clinician scientists, and professors of the faculty to learn on emerging issues in the field, discuss relevant scientific challenges and opportunities, and facilitate networking and collaboration across research groups, chairs, departments, and universities.
