Costs
Semester contribution
The university charges a fee per semester for the semester ticket and the student union fee. You can find the current amount of the fees here.
Tuition fees
No fees are currently charged at our university.
Monthly costs
You will need about 1.000 - 1.300 Euros per month to finance your living expenses. Of course, this amount is a guideline; the actual expenses depend on the amount of rent you pay and your consumer behaviour.
?
Composition of monthly costs:
| Rent | at least 400 - 600 Euros |
| Broadcasting fee | approx. 20 Euros |
| Health insurance | approx. 140 Euros |
| Food | approx. 300 Euros |
| Clothing, study materials, other needs | approx. 150 Euros |
?
Please note:
Plan your living costs realistically
We want to support you in having a smooth start and a successful study period in Germany. Therefore, we provide transparent information about the actual cost of living.
Proof of financial resources and visa
If you need a visa, you must already prove during your application in your home country that your living expenses in Germany are secured (e.g. with a blocked account).
You will also need this proof again when you apply for your residence permit in Germany (about three months before your visa expires). Important: When applying for a residence permit for the first time, you cannot replace this proof with a part-time job.
Higher costs at the beginning
In the first weeks after your arrival, your expenses are often higher than expected. For example:
-
Deposit for your accommodation (up to three months¡¯ rent)
-
Everyday items (e.g. clothes, kitchen items, furniture, technical equipment)
-
Public transport costs until you receive and activate your CampusCard
If you are new to Germany or living on your own for the first time, it may take some time to find affordable shops and manage your budget well. Therefore, plan for higher expenses in the first months.
Accommodation
A room in student housing (Studierendenwerk) is not always available immediately. Many students therefore rent a private room or a shared flat at first. These options are often more expensive (e.g. around €600 instead of €350).
After a few semesters, you often have the chance to move to a more affordable room.
Blocked account and registration
Important for students with a blocked account: After your arrival, you must register your address with the city of Augsburg. This process currently takes about three months.
During this time, you usually:
-
cannot access your blocked account
-
cannot open a German bank account
Please make sure you have enough additional funds to cover your living costs for the first three months.
Part-time jobs and tax ID
If you plan to work during your studies, please note:
You will receive your German tax ID only after registering with the city (currently about three months). Without a tax ID, you are not allowed to work.
In addition, many jobs require German language skills. Without sufficient German, it may be difficult to find a suitable job.

Scholarships for degree-seeking students
It is important to be aware that Germany does not have a broad scholarship culture comparable to some other countries. Financial aid opportunities are limited and are generally awarded based on outstanding academic performance or specific eligibility criteria.
Scholarships rarely cover the full cost of living, and they are typically not intended to replace the financial resources required for visa/ residence permit purposes.?
Please note that the University of Augsburg can only provide very limited funds for scholarships. Most scholarships are grants for one semester that cover approximately 50 per cent of your living costs. You should not assume that you will be able to cover your entire living costs with a scholarship that is available to you for the duration of your studies.
- You have to apply for scholarships.
- Funding is only possible after successful studying at the University of Augsburg for at least two semesters (Master students: after one semester).
- You can only apply if there¡¯s an open scholarship announcement.
- You can find open scholarship announcements on the Internet on the "News" page of the International Office.
The f.au.st e.V. association can arrange help when gifted students (primarily from non-EU countries) are in (financial) need.
