Our events and excursions for the Summer Semester 2026 are currently being compiled and will be published here continuously until the start of the?semester.

Registration is possible as soon as each event is announced, usually about two weeks in advance. You will receive an invitation by email and can then register via the form below.

The networking events are primarily aimed at international researchers. Partners can often participate if places are still available. Please note, however, that unless otherwise stated, children are generally not able to attend.

Augsburg City Tour

As usual, we will start the new semester together with a guided tour through Augsburg. This is particularly suitable for researchers who have only recently arrived, but also for anyone else who would like to get to know their fellow researchers over lunch afterwards.

Welcome Service Reception

In the past, we regularly organized receptions for international researchers and their hosts. We're now pleased to revive this tradition and are planning a reception once again.

At the beginning of each semester the Welcome Service organises a city tour of Augsburg for international researchers as well as a family city tour especially for international researchers accompanied?by their partner and children.

Being founded just before the turn of the millennium around 0 BC, Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. It is associated with names like Jakob Fugger, Bertold Brecht, Leopold Mozart and Rudolf Diesel. Since 2019 Augsburg can even boast itself a UNESCO World Heritage site for its water managment system.

We will meet at Augsburg City Hall Square and will then spend approximately two hours exploring the city together, learning about the city's water management system. Our city tour will lead us through the historic city center with its?magnificent fountains, towers and churches.?We will stroll along Maximilianstra?e with its splendid buildings and hidden courtyards as well as along the Lech canals where the craftsmen’s houses are located. After the tour, we will have lunch together at the restaurant Zeughaus Stuben.

The Welcome Service will be covering the costs for the city tour in English. Food and drinks at the restaurant (approx. 20€) will be at your own expense. Places are limited; registration is first come first served.

Events Offered

Every semester, the Welcome Service offers researchers from abroad a varied program of events with excursions and regular get-togethers, which often leave a lasting impression on participants.
In an informal and international atmosphere, our events enable researchers to establish interdisciplinary and cross-faculty contacts that contribute significantly to a successful research stay at the University of Augsburg.

Our offer of events ranges from city trips and museum visits to boat rides and hikes in the countryside. In addition to the most important sights in Bavaria, such as Neuschwanstein Castle or the state capital of Munich, the program also includes ‘hidden gems’ such as the medieval town of Landsberg am Lech or the Partnach Gorge.

Excursion to Ulm

Ulm is a vibrant city on the Danube in Baden-Württemberg, located right on the border with Bavaria. Ulm is especially famous for the Ulm Minster, which has the tallest church tower in Germany and was until recently even the tallest in the world. Our visit began with an informative guided tour of the Minster and the historic old town, where we learned a lot about the city’s history, followed by a shared lunch. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to explore the traditional Ulm Christmas Market, which, with its festive lights, seasonal treats, and wide variety of gift ideas, created a wonderful pre-Christmas atmosphere.

Visit to the Augsburg Planetarium

After an introduction to the current night sky, we embarked together on a 90-minute “Journey to a Billion Suns” at the S-Planetarium Augsburg. During the show, we learned a great deal about both historical and modern methods of measuring in space. For a long time, 3D measurements were impossible, but today satellites can determine stellar distances with incredible accuracy and help us understand the structure and size of our home galaxy. On a fascinating journey through time and history, we also explored the fundamental technologies of star mapping and discovered the many features of the Milky Way. The evening concluded pleasantly with snacks and drinks.

Excursion to the Royal Castles

Once the private retreat of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it is now one of the most famous and popular castles in Europe: Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau. Surrounded by the Alps and idyllic lakes, this 19th century fairytale castle is said to have inspired the castle in the Disney logo. Our trip to the southern Allg?u region therefore offered an ideal mix of nature, architecture and history. After arriving in Hohenschwangau, we first hiked up to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, where we were given an informative tour of the premises. After a short lunch break, we also explored the surrounding area and the lesser known Hohenschwangau Castle, the summer and hunting residence of the House of Wittelsbach, which is not far from Neuschwanstein and equally worth a visit.

Augsburg City Tour

Founded by the Romans around 0 BC, just before the turn of the millennium, Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. But Augsburg has much more to offer than just ancient history: even in more recent times, important personalities such as Jakob Fugger, Leopold Mozart, Bertolt Brecht and Rudolf Diesel have left their mark on the cityscape and history of Augsburg. Our guided city tour took us through the historic city center, past magnificent fountains, towers and churches. We were particularly impressed by Maximilianstra?e with its magnificent buildings and courtyards. Afterwards, we rounded off the tour with a joint lunch.

Excursion to Eibsee

The idyllic Eibsee lies at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The imposing mountain range in the background and the crystal-clear, blue-green, shimmering water create a unique atmosphere that invites relaxation and makes everyday life feel far away. After a shared lunch right by the lake, we set out on a two-hour hike along the Eibsee loop trail, which led us alongside the shore and offered numerous photo opportunities.

Excursion to Landsberg am Lech

Landsberg am Lech is a charming Bavarian town with a picturesque old town located directly on the banks of the Lech River. Despite its proximity to the bustling cities of Augsburg and Munich, Landsberg offers an opportunity to relax and escape from big city life. On an informative guided tour of the historic old town, divided into the Upper and Lower Town, we became acquainted with Landsberg’s most important sights. After a shared lunch, we took advantage of the beautiful weather to stroll along the Lech promenade individually and round off the excursion with coffee and cake in a café next to the Mutterturm, one of the city’s distinctive landmarks.

Riegele Brewery Tour

The Riegele Brewery is one of the oldest private breweries in Bavaria and has been owned by the Riegele family since the 19th century and nowadays in the fifth generation. The brewery was founded in 1386 under the name ‘The Golden Horse Brewery’ before being renamed to the family name. On a guided tour of the brewery, we visited the malthouse, fermentation rooms and lager cellar and gained an interesting insight into the traditional art of brewing. We pleasantly rounded off the evening together with a ‘Brotzeit’, a traditional Bavarian snack, and a beer tasting.

Excursion to Andechs Monastery at Lake Ammer

Andechs Monastery is not only one of the oldest pilgrimage churches in Bavaria, but also one of the few remaining abbey breweries in Germany. Perched on the 'Holy Mountain of Bavaria' high above the eastern shore of Lake Ammer, this distinctive regional landmark is the perfect destination for a relaxing day trip rich in nature and culture. With a boat ride across the lake and a hike to the monastery, we were able to enjoy the idyllic 'Five Lakes Region' to the full and spend a beautiful summer's day together in Upper Bavaria. The trip was rounded off with a joint visit to the beer garden and Bavarian specialties.

Welcome Service Summer Celebration

The Welcome Service celebrated its 10th anniversary at the University of Augsburg in the summer semester 2023. As part of the anniversary celebration, all researchers from abroad were warmly welcomed to the University of Augsburg and the engagement of the hosts was honoured. In addition to a festive musical opening by the university orchestra and the official welcome by Prof. Dr. Peter Welzel, former Vice President for, among others, Internationalisation, speeches were given by the Head of the International Office, Dr. Sabine Tamm, and Dr. Jonah Otto, as an example of successful internationalisation at the university. Following the speech of thanks by the Head of Welcome Services, Susanne Graf, the evening was rounded off with music and a successful summer evening made its way, which offered the opportunity for an interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange of experiences and a chance to look back on the achievements of the Welcome Services while enjoying a sumptuous buffet and DJ entertainment.
