The Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Materials Engineering at the University of Augsburg at the Institute of Physics is seeking to make the following appointment at the earliest possible starting date

University Professor
Salary grade W2 with Tenure Track to W3
for Bioorganic Chemistry

The appointment holder will be employed as a public servant for an initial period of six years. Following a positive tenure evaluation, the appointment will be converted to a tenured public servant position on salary grade W3. The regulations of the Augsburg Tenure Track Model apply. Applications by qualified early-career researchers are expressly welcomed. Key selection criteria are extensive success in obtaining third-party funding and high-ranking publications.

The successful candidate is expected to have an outstanding track record at the interface of chemistry, biophysics, and life sciences, and to pursue innovative research approaches in the field of Bioorganic Chemistry. Methodological expertise should include organic synthesis, biochemical and biophysical characterization of biologically relevant molecules, as well as cellular and/or molecular application systems. Desirable areas of research include biocatalysis, biosensing, chemical modification of biological macromolecules, molecular recognition and signal transduction, biomolecular design (protein or DNA/RNA engineering), therapeutic and diagnostic applications.

At the Institute of Physics, basic and applied research is carried out using methods from experimental and theoretical physics, materials science, chemistry, and quantitative life sciences. This offers a wide range of collaboration opportunities, including the Faculty of Medicine.

The teaching duties associated with the professorship include representing organic chemistry and biochemistry in the faculty's study programs. Active participation in the development of existing and new study programs in the area of quantitative life sciences is expected.

Requirements for employment are a completed university degree, pedagogical qualification, special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, as well as additional scientific achievements, which are demonstrated by a habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements or are provided in the context of a junior professorship.

Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 52 may be appointed to the civil service; otherwise, they may be hired under a private-law employment relationship.
