Train connections and ticket options

Train connections can best be checked on the website of Deutsche Bahn (DB). We recommend using the DB Navigator app, as it provides real-time connection information on your smartphone and allows you to purchase and display tickets directly within the app.
Alternatively, tickets can also be purchased with cash or card, either at ticket machines located on the platforms or at a Deutsche Bahn information counter (DB Reisezentrum), which can also be found at most airports. Check here to see which services are available at a specific train station.

If you are unable to look up current train connections online during your journey, you can ask the staff at a DB Reisezentrum to print out the available connections to Augsburg for you.?
For regular use of public transportation, the Deutschland-Ticket is a convenient option. It is a monthly cancellable subscription that entitles you to travel in 2nd class on all local and regional public transport throughout Germany (excluding long-distance trains such as ICE, IC, and EC, as well as long-distance buses).
The Deutschland-Ticket can be purchased online via the Deutsche Bahn website, through the DB Navigator app, via the AVV, or through other providers.?
Enrolled PhD students at the University of Augsburg can obtain the Deutschland-Ticket at a discounted price through the AVV.

Public Transportation in Augsburg

The public transportation network within the Augsburg Transport Association (AVV) is well-developed. Numerous bus and tram lines operate throughout the city and mostly converge at K?nigsplatz, which is about a ten-minute walk from the main train station.
To find the easiest route from Augsburg Central Station to your accommodation, we recommend using Google Maps. Alternatively, you can use the AVV journey planner or the AVV app.
You find an overview of the network lines and the fare zones of the Augsburg Transport Association here. The city area is divided into several zones, with zones 10 and 20 covering almost the entire city center and the surrounding districts. If you travel within zones 10 and 20 (e.g., from the city center to the university), you will need a ticket for two zones, i.e., fare level 2 (zones 10 and 20).

Travel within the City-Zone (e.g., between the main station and K?nigsplatz) is free of charge.?
All AVV tickets, except for short-distance tickets (Kurzstreckentickets), are also valid on regional trains within Augsburg, as indicated in the route network.

Validity of Foreign Driver¡¯s Licenses

If you have a driver¡¯s license from an EU or EEA member state, it is usually valid in Germany until its expiration date. You should apply for a renewal or obtain a German driver¡¯s license in good time. Note that different rules may apply to certain license categories (e.g., C, CE, and D).

If your driver¡¯s license was not issued by an EU or EEA country, it remains valid for six months after you move to Germany. In most cases, you must carry a translation of your national driver¡¯s license or an international driver¡¯s license; however, this depends on the issuing country. After six months, you will need a German driver¡¯s license. The requirements depend on the country that issued your original license. Therefore, contact the responsible licensing authority in good time.

Further information can be found here.
