Information on Using the Bloomberg Terminal

?

With the Bloomberg license, the range of database access available to the Faculty of Business and Economics (WiWi) is expanded. These resources can be used for both research and teaching purposes.

?

Content:

Bloomberg Terminals provide access to real-time and historical data on equity, foreign exchange, and commodity markets, as well as fixed-income markets from almost every country in the world. They also offer fundamental data, graphical applications, financial analysis tools, and news from Bloomberg’s own news service as well as from other providers.

?

Access to Bloomberg:

Efficient use of Bloomberg requires a certain level of experience and discipline. Therefore, at the Faculty of Business and Economics (WiWi), terminal use is organized so that each chair designates a responsible person internally, who coordinates appointments and handles data downloads for their respective chair. Please contact this person from your chair if needed. Downloading data to Excel should be arranged through the designated responsible person for each chair.

Access to the Bloomberg Terminal and appointment scheduling is organized by Ms Antje Hilbrig (Secretary, Chair of Utz) at:?lcf@wiwi.uni-augsburg.de

?

Bloomberg in Teaching/for Students:

In principle, students can also create a Bloomberg account for themselves. This allows Bloomberg to be integrated into courses and theses. Instructors of courses with Bloomberg components are asked to register the need for Bloomberg use with Ms Hilbrig?at lcf@wiwi.uni-augsburg.de?before the start of the semester. If necessary, regular time slots can be reserved for student use within the framework of courses.

Student use of Bloomberg without downloading data to Excel?is also possible outside of courses, seminars, or theses, but still requires registration with Ms Antje Hilbrig at?lcf@wiwi.uni-augsburg.de. Please attach a short description (0.5 to 1 page) of the reason for using Bloomberg to your registration. The registration should be submitted at least two weeks before the desired date. This description should address the following aspects:

?

The description should include the following details:????

  1. Name, student ID number, degree program, and semester
  2. Content of the research on Bloomberg?
  3. Context of Bloomberg use (e.g. seminar paper, thesis, student project)
  4. If the project/paper is part of a course: which chair organizes the course?
  5. Data points to be viewed or analyzed?

Location:

The Bloomberg Terminal is located in our Data Lab, Room J 2601.

Appointments for using the Bloomberg Terminal can be requested and scheduled with Ms Ante Hilbrig (Secretary, Chair of Utz)?at lcf@wiwi.uni-augsburg.de.?Loan transponders for access to Room J 2601 are issued in coordination with Ms. Hilbrig (Mon–Thu).

?

Registration:

Instructions for registering for Bloomberg can be found?here?.

Efficient Use of the Download Limit:

There is a monthly download limit?for exporting data from Bloomberg to Excel. To ensure efficient use of the Bloomberg Terminal for all users, please observe the following guidelines:

  • Avoid multible downloads of the same data::
Archive downloaded data on the Bloomberg computer by saving a copy as "Feste Werte?in D:\Bloomberg\Daten.

  • Record core information in a central Excel file::
Enter the main details of the downloaded data into an Excel file named Datenarchiv.xlsx?using the following structure for file names:?Variable_StartYear_EndYear_Sample.xlsx

  • Check before downloading:
Always verify in Datenarchiv.xlsx?whether the desired data (or parts of it) have already been downloaded by someone else.

  • Use alternative sources when possible:
Data that are also available via Datastream, LSEG Workspace?or other providers without download limits should be obtained from those sources.

  • Limit test downloads:
Downloads for testing purposes should be restricted to a small sample or a short time series.
