Fiber-reinforced composite materials have become indispensable in modern lightweight design. They enable the exploitation of material-specific advantages and allow the realization of lightweight and highly efficient structures. Compared to conventional materials, however, fiber-reinforced polymers require new technologies along the entire process chain in order to fully utilize their potential.

The Chair of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Technology focuses on various technologies across the process chain. One major research area is the development of manufacturing as well as dust-free joining technologies for fiber-reinforced composites with thermoplastic and thermoset matrix systems. In addition to joining technologies for single-matrix systems, the chair also conducts research on joining processes for matrix-hybrid fiber-reinforced composites.

The research is conducted in cooperation with the Center for Lightweight Production Technology (ZLP) at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Augsburg. The ZLP focuses on production technologies for full-scale components. Through this collaboration, technologies can be optimized and evaluated at an early maturity stage with respect to practical application and challenges arising from technology scaling.
