The Chair conducts research primarily on the foundations of criminal law (criminal law theory, constitutional principles of criminal law, and the history of ideas), on the Special Part of criminal law, and on criminological and doctrinal questions of corporate and economic sanctioning law (including the GDPR, the Act against Restraints of Competition, and the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act). Further areas of research include medical criminal law, the internationalization of criminal law and mutual legal assistance, as well as sports law in its international and European dimensions.

The Hospital Legal Counsel: What Comes Next After the Federal Constitutional Court’s “Triage II” Decision?

The First Senate of the Federal Constitutional Court (BVerfG) declared Section 5c of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG), which had been in force for almost three years, incompatible with Article 12(1) of the Basic Law (GG) at the end of September 2025. Within just a few years, the Senate has thus ruled for the second time on the legal framework governing triage and has, on both occasions, found the applicable legal situation unconstitutional. This is an extremely unusual occurrence.

Publication: “Corporate Criminal Law Days”

The newly published volume highlights not only the fact that national and European legislators are continuously creating new corruption offences, but also that the law on corporate sanctions is becoming increasingly complex. This is due to general sanctioning rules being overlapped and displaced by an ever growing number of special provisions. The volume examines these developments and the practical difficulties they create, while also addressing the question of whether — and to what extent — greater systematic coherence would be desirable and achievable.
