This talk suggests that “compost” is a metaphor that best describes the poetic method as well as the epistemological interest of Ed Roberson’s poetry. Being an African American writer, Roberson’s interest in the nature poem may come as a surprise to some readers. But his description of the genre as a form that allows us to develop a “sense of the larger Earth” provides a first glimpse into the mindset of a poet who, in his work, explores the messy reality of life in the Anthropocene.
