Medical Care
Medical Emergencies
In case of a serious medical emergency, you should immediately call the corresponding emergency number:
Emergency medical service/Ambulance: 112?
Fire department emergency number: 112
Police emergency number: 110
Poison emergency number (Munich): 089 192 40
Emergency numbers must only be called in case of life-threatening complaints and emergencies. If you do not have a medical emergency, but an acute complaint, you can also call a GP and usually come in without an appointment.?
If you need medical help over the weekend, you can either go to the hospital’s ambulatory emergency room (only in dire need for medical help) or call the medical on-call service (Bereitschaftsdienst) at 116 117. They will either send someone or refer you to the
responsible on-call practice.
Doctor Appointments
In Germany, you usually go to a general practitioner GP (Hausarzt) for a doctor appointment. It can be useful to register with a GP at the beginning of your stay in Germany, so you can consult the same GP for future concerns, as they then already have information about your medical history.
If you need to see a specialist, you will get a referral (?berweisung) from the GP. Please note that your health insurance might not pay for your treatment without such a referral. However, dentists and gynecologists are an exception, you can see them without a referral.?
For contact details of GPs and specialists in your proximity, you may use the search engine by the
Bavarian Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.?
English-speaking medical professionals in Augsburg can be found
here. You can contact the physicians directly via telephone or e-mail and ask for an appointment for a consultation in English.
Please remember to always bring your health card to your appointments. It is advised to generally have the card with you in case of a medical emergency. PhD students and visiting scholars who are privately insured must bring proof of their insurance with them. Some GPs as well as specialists solely treat privately insured patients. Therefore, please double-check with the clerk when arranging an appointment.
Dentists
Privately insured individuals should check which dental services are included in their insurance, as coverage may vary depending on the insurance plan.?
In case of acute dental complaints over the weekend, the emergency dental service can be reached at 0821 / 54372997.
